SPOILER ALERT!

NIGHT SHIFT

— feeling booklikes
Night Shift - Stephen King

THE BOOGEYMAN SHORT STORY REVIEW - A beleaguered father, plagued by guilt, visits a psychiatrist. As he lays on the couch, he recounts the murders of his three children. The Boogeyman was originally published in the March 1973 issue of Cavalier, and later collected in Stephen King's 1978 short story collection, entitled Night Shift. If you’re a regularly reader of my blog, you’re well aware of my fondness for this fellow horror writer. Some of my earliest reading memories are being engrossed in novels like Carrie, Pet Semetary, Cujo and Christine. King takes our subconscious fears, creates relatable characters, and loves a twist ending. What horror writer doesn’t imagine a monster lurking in the closet? While this story is very short, in that respect, it doesn’t disappoint. A must read!

CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR

— feeling booklikes
The Clan of the Cave Bear - Jean M. Auel

CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR - It takes an author with a great deal of daring to attempt a tale with such an epic scope as this one. In Jean M Auel's novel, entitled 'The Clan of the Cave Bear', she explores the imagined interaction of our Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal ancestors. Based on interviews I have read, she was greatly inspired by research and archaeology, such as the Chauvet cave (see my blog for related posts). If you love high concept or historical fiction, you owe it to yourself to read this book!

FRANKENSTEIN

— feeling booklikes
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley, Maurice Hindle
FRANKENSTEIN - This horror story has elements of mystery, supernatural, a gloomy setting and a character that bridges the worlds of the living and undead. The result is arguably the most identified classic gothic novel. The genesis of Frankenstein came to Mary Shelley in a dream. She was a part of a group visiting Lord Byron (poet of the romantic movement) confined to a villa remaining indoors due to incessant rain. He issued the famous challenge to write a horror story, which ultimately led to Frankenstein and John Polidori writing The Vampyre. Percy Bysshe Shelley was in the villa also, a prominent romantic poet in his own right, as well as Mary’s husband. I am particularly fond of the 1931 film version starring Boris Karloff. Don’t be put off by the movie era or black and white format. This was a pre-code film that didn’t flinch from controversial content. The pace is quick, black/ white reinforces the tone, utilizes stark visual imagery and pioneering movie effects/ sets. This is a classic Universal Pictures monster flick in an era where no other studio could have done it better. Not to be missed!
